Short answer: No official list names the best personal injury lawyer in Bellflower. “Best” here means criteria for judging a lawyer’s plan, not a ranking or a promise. In Bellflower, California (Los Angeles County), the Sheriff’s Department usually writes the report for a crash on a city street, and the CHP on a state highway. Generally, a California injury lawsuit must be filed within two years.

The first days after an injury in Bellflower

The first days after a crash or a fall mostly decide what evidence will exist later. In general terms, these steps tend to matter, in roughly this order:

  1. Medical care. Getting checked promptly protects health, and the records show when symptoms started.
  2. The report details. The responding agency, the deputy’s or officer’s name, and the report number.
  3. Scene evidence. Photos of the vehicles, the road surface, and the injuries, when it was safe to take them, and the names of witnesses.
  4. Camera footage. Businesses and homes may keep video for only a short time, so it helps to ask early.
  5. Insurance contacts. Policy details exchanged at the scene, and every letter or email from an insurer.
  6. A deadline check. Whether a public entity could be involved, because that can generally start a six-month clock, as explained below.

Practical rule: A short note written the same day, with the time, the place, the agency, and the report number, is often more useful later than a long account written weeks after.

Who writes the report in Bellflower

Bellflower, California, is an incorporated city in southeast Los Angeles County. This page is about that city, not about other places that share the name. The City has no city police department of its own. As of October 25, 2026, the Sheriff’s Lakewood Station page listed the station at 5130 Clark Avenue, Lakewood CA 90712, phone (562) 623-3500, and said it serves the City of Bellflower (among other cities and unincorporated areas). The County’s list of the 88 cities includes Bellflower.

On a state highway, the California Highway Patrol generally handles the crash instead. The CHP Santa Fe Springs Area (550) page lists Bellflower among the cities that Area serves in southeast Los Angeles County. As of October 25, 2026, that page listed the office at 10051 Orr and Day Road, Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670, phone (562) 649-6800.

The report number given at the scene shows which agency holds it. In an emergency, the number is 9-1-1.

Getting a copy of the Sheriff’s report

A Sheriff’s report is not requested from City Hall. There are two paths inside the Sheriff’s Department. As of October 25, 2026:

  1. Lakewood Station lobby. The station page said to call (562) 623-3500 before arriving, with the file or report number, to check whether the report is available. When it is ready, come to the lobby and pay the current fee. The page said payment can be made by cash or check, and that to receive a traffic-collision copy you must be a party listed in the report or an insurance-company employee representing that party.
  2. Records and Identification Bureau. The Sheriff’s records FAQ said a traffic-collision report can be requested by calling (562) 345-4441 to submit the request and schedule an in-person pickup, or by mail. The Public Services Section works by appointment only. The Bureau’s fee sheet, linked from the FAQ and opened on October 25, 2026, listed $25 when a file or booking number is provided and a record is found, and $35 when a number is not provided and a search is conducted. Release of collision reports is restricted to those authorized under Vehicle Code section 20012.

The FAQ page itself does not print those dollar amounts in the body text; the amounts above come from the linked PDF as of October 25, 2026. Fees can change, so the figure should be confirmed at the time of the request. The pages gave no wait time for collision reports, so this guide does not state one.

For a CHP report, the CHP’s Request a Crash Report page explains that a party of interest can request a copy online through its Crash Portal, or in person or by mail with a CHP 190 form.

Deadlines, and claims against a public entity

The lawsuit deadline. Generally, Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1 allows two years to file a lawsuit for injury to, or the death of, a person caused by the wrongful act or neglect of another. A page on the statute of limitations for personal injury explains that deadline in more detail.

A public entity changes the calendar. When the City of Bellflower, the County of Los Angeles, or another public entity may be responsible, Government Code section 911.2 generally requires a written claim within six months after the cause of action accrues. That claim comes before any lawsuit.

Exceptions and tolling rules can move these dates, and waiting for a report generally does not pause them. Which Los Angeles County Superior Court courthouse hears a civil case depends on the case type and the court’s rules; the court offers a filing location search.

Some types of injury claims

These are some types of claims, and each one depends on its own evidence:

  • Car crashes. The Sheriff’s or CHP report, photos, dashcam video, and each driver’s insurance policy are usually the starting point. A related Bellflower guide covers auto accident attorneys for Bellflower.
  • Pedestrian injuries. Signal timing, crosswalk markings, and sight lines can matter. A related guide covers pedestrian accidents in California.
  • Bicycle incidents. A turning driver who does not yield, or a car door opened into a rider’s path, can lead to a claim.
  • Slip, trip, and fall injuries. A hazard with no warning can support a claim against a property owner, or against a public entity when the property is public.

This page gives no Bellflower crash statistics, because we cite figures only from SWITRS, UC Berkeley TIMS, or the US Census. Where a crash happened says nothing about who was at fault.

How to judge a lawyer for a Bellflower claim

This page is not a ranking, and LA Law Group does not promise outcomes. These questions work for any California personal injury lawyer you are considering:

  1. California license. The State Bar of California publishes attorney license records.
  2. The right records. Does the lawyer know that Bellflower contracts with the Sheriff through the Lakewood Station, and when the CHP is the agency instead?
  3. Public entity awareness. Does the lawyer check early whether the City, the County, or the state could be involved?
  4. An investigation plan. Photos, video, witnesses, medical records, and every available insurance policy, matched to the type of injury.
  5. Communication. Who gives you updates, and how often?
  6. Written terms. Does the fee agreement say in plain words when a fee is owed and who pays case costs?

For the same questions applied to a vehicle crash, there is a guide on how to choose a car accident lawyer.

How shared fault can change a recovery

California follows pure comparative negligence: damages are reduced by a person’s percentage of fault, but a claim is not barred just because fault is shared. A related guide explains what pure comparative negligence means. Fault is argued from evidence, so the report, the photos, and the witnesses matter. It also helps to understand your rights before giving a recorded statement to the other side’s insurer, because early statements can be used later.

Hypothetical: a car door opened into a bicycle path (illustrative only)

Illustrative hypothetical, not a case result: This example does not describe a real client and does not predict any outcome. On a city street in Bellflower, a person riding a bicycle passes a row of parked cars. A driver opens a door into the rider’s path without looking. The rider falls and fractures a wrist. A deputy from the Lakewood Station writes the report. A store camera across the street shows the door opening just before the fall. The driver’s insurer argues that the rider was going too fast between the parked cars. For illustration only, assume a jury assigned 70% of the fault to the driver for opening the door without checking, and 30% to the rider for not leaving enough clearance. Under pure comparative negligence, the rider’s proven damages would be reduced by 30%, the rider’s own share, before any other adjustments. This scenario is for education only; real outcomes depend on the evidence and the law that applies.

Generally two years from the injury under California Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. A claim against a public entity generally has an earlier six-month step under Government Code section 911.2. How do I get a copy of a Sheriff's crash report for a Bellflower crash?

As of October 25, 2026, the Lakewood Station page said to call (562) 623-3500 before coming to the lobby with the file or report number, and the Records and Identification Bureau FAQ said a copy can also be requested by calling (562) 345-4441 to schedule pickup, or by mail. On a state highway, the CHP generally holds the report instead.

Does the CHP handle crashes in Bellflower?

Can I still recover if I was partly at fault?

California follows pure comparative negligence. An injured person's damages are generally reduced by that person's own share of fault rather than barred. How fault is split depends on the evidence, not only on what an insurer says.

What should I ask a lawyer at a first consultation?

Useful questions include whether the lawyer is licensed in California, which agency wrote the report and how a copy is requested, whether a public entity could be involved, what investigation steps come next, who gives updates, and whether the fee and cost terms are in writing.

How do personal injury fees work at LA Law Group?
